Guillows Vought F4u-4 Corsair. US Marines called it the Sweetheart of Okinawa and the Japanese called it Whistling Death. It fought through the Pacific campaign of World War II and the Korean engagement of the early 1950s. The first production Corsair flew on June 25, 1942, at a time when the Japanese offensive looked unstoppable. Late that year, Corsair squadrons reached Marines on Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands, and the air war turned for the Allies for good. In early 1944 the British Navy brought the Corsair into carrier service, and nine months later the US Navy made it the backbone of its carrier fleet.
