DKW started out in 1919 and became famous in the thirties for finely built two-stroke racing motorcycles. That same decade the Wehrmacht's mechanized reconnaissance units were speeding up motorcycle deployment. The Wehrmacht wasn't sold on DKW's two-stroke at first. In 1938 it adopted the 11hp single-cylinder DKW NZ 350 medium cycle. In 1940 production began on the NZ 350/1, modified for military use with a cast iron engine block, a centrifugal air filter and braces running from the frame to an added luggage carrier. It wasn't built for heavy cross-country work. But its light weight and easy handling made it a go-to courier bike in Europe, North Africa and Russia well into WWII.
