About this part
The Sherman that got a bigger gun. In the 1960s, Israeli Ordnance Corps took their M4A1 Shermans, bolted in the French 105mm CN-105-F1 and renamed them M51s. The bigger gun brought a muzzle brake to tame the recoil and a counterweight on the back of the turret. A 460hp diesel and HVSS suspension with wider T80 tracks gave it the legs to keep up. In the 1967 Six-Day War, M51s went up against T-54/55 and JS-3 tanks from the Egyptian, Iraqi and Syrian armies. HEAT rounds from that 105mm let them take on those targets. They kept earning their keep until they were retired in the early 1980s.
