The Beetle still pulls crowds. Its design goes back to the 1930s, when Dr. Ferdinand Porsche drew up the framework for the People's Car. More than 20 million were built, and no other vehicle has topped that figure. The sturdy platform chassis carries a reliable air-cooled flat-four, and four-wheel independent suspension gives crisp handling and comfort. The war wrecked its marketing, but it roared back afterward under Heinrich Nordhoff. A bigger displacement and better visibility kept it setting the standard for compact cars, decade after decade. The 1966 model is the classic, keeping most of the original design traits, and it's a collector's item today.
